Public Misconceptions
According to senior author Rod J. Rohrich, MD, of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, a recent study has shown that the public is often confused about the differences between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon.
During the study, researchers created an internet survey to measure public perceptions of cosmetic surgery. Out of the 5,135 people who completed the survey, 87% believed that surgeons must have special credentials and training to perform and advertise themselves as cosmetic or plastic surgeons. More than half were confused about the training needed to become board-certified.
In reality, surgeons are required to complete at least six years of residency training to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Just one year is required to be certified by the America Board of Cosmetic Surgery.
The Importance of Board-Certification
With the demand for minimally invasive procedures and cosmetic procedures rising, more and more physicians are offering aesthetic surgery. This is great for board-certified surgeons; however, many unqualified physicians are now practicing cosmetic surgery with unsatisfactory results.
It is extremely important that you do your research before committing to a surgeon. Be sure that they are board-certified and experienced in the procedure you are interested in.
