The neck is often the first place to show signs of aging. As the years go by, you can start to see sagging skin, crepiness, and wrinkling. Luckily, with the help of a neck lift, you can turn back the clock and achieve the firmer, smoother, and younger-looking neck you desire.
Double-board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bohley will work with you to ensure you receive the beautiful results you desire.
What is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift (also known as a lower rhytidectomy or neck rejuvenation) is a surgical procedure and facial plastic surgery treatment that improves the appearance of the neck and jawline. It can address excess fat (double chin), neck skin laxity issues, jowls, a “turkey neck,” and muscle banding for a more youthful-looking appearance. It can also be combined with a facelift surgery and non-surgical skin resurfacing treatments for a full facial rejuvenation.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?
You are likely a good candidate for a neck lift in Portland if you meet the following criteria:
- In good overall health
- Nonsmoker
- Don’t have any medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process or cause poor wound healing
- Have realistic expectations
- Struggling with lines and wrinkles, muscle banding, excess fat, and loose skin on the neck.
What to Expect During Neck Lift Surgery
To start your surgical neck lift procedure, we’ll begin by administering general anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. From there, Dr. Bohley will make a small incision behind each ear and possibly underneath the chin (depending on the changes that need to be made). Through these incisions, Dr. Bohley will then tighten the neck muscles, remove excess skin, and, if needed, remove excess fat using neck liposuction, giving you a smoother, firmer, and more contoured appearance to your neck.
Once all the necessary changes are made, the incisions will be closed, and you’ll be ready to start the recovery process. Because this is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to go home the same day, but you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.
How long your neck lift takes will depend on the results you’re looking for, but generally, it can take anywhere from 2-4 hours.
What to Expect from Neck Lift Recovery
After your neck lift, you will likely have swelling, bruising, and some discomfort. You will want to rest as much as possible, avoid strenuous activities, keep your head elevated, and wear a compression garment to aid in swelling. You will also want to regularly wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun. Dr. Bohley will also prescribe pain medication to ensure you are comfortable throughout the recovery process.
The bruising and swelling will subside in a couple of weeks. Most patients can return to work within two weeks, but it can take several more weeks before you can get back to working out.
Neck Lift Results
While some patients see initial results immediately, the swelling and bruising will hide the most significant improvements. It typically takes a few weeks to a few months before most of the swelling and bruising dissipates, and at that point, you will be able to see your results.
How long your results last can depend on how well you follow your aftercare instructions and how well you take care of your neck. Typically, results can last for a decade or more. A neck lift can’t stop the aging process altogether, so you may see some wrinkles and sagging eventually, but your neck will look more youthful than it would have if you didn’t have the procedure.
