With summer right around the corner, Portland residents are focused on achieving their bikini bodies. There are multiple procedures available to attain a sleek, toned figure, but everybody is different, and what may work for you may not work for someone else. Here, we will discuss two body contouring options: Liposuction and CoolSculpting.

Liposuction

Pros: Not only is liposuction a simple procedure to undergo, it has been proven safe, and also requires less down time than other invasive surgeries. This procedure also permanently eliminates fat cells from your body, meaning that if a healthy lifestyle is upheld, results will be maintained. Lastly, results are immediate, and the complete outcome of the surgery is apparent within a few days.

Cons: If a healthy lifestyle is not followed after the surgery, results will not be maintained. Also, with any surgery, there are risks involved. General or local anesthesia will be used, and may cause complications to those with underlying diseases or conditions. Blood clots, delayed healing, scarring, and irregularities may also occur.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates for liposuction surgery are those close to their ideal body weight (within 30%) and have areas of fat that are resistant to exercise. Non-smokers and those in good health will have a quicker recovery time.

CoolSculpting

Pros: CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure, so there are no incisions required. It also doesn’t require downtime, so patients can resume their everyday tasks directly after treatment. Furthermore, this treatment is a great option for those who have small fat pockets in the love handles, inner thighs, arms, and more, reducing 20% of the fat in the problem area(s) in just one treatment.

Cons: Although this treatment is non-invasive, it may involve some discomfort. The vacuum-like device can cause bruising and swelling to the treatment areas, and temporary numbness may also occur. Results are also not immediate, taking three to four months to completely appear.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates for CoolSculpting have unwanted fat pockets that cannot be remedied by exercise and healthy eating alone. CoolSculpting is not a treatment for obese patients.
