The holiday season is officially upon us. However, given the abundance of seasonal treats available at holiday parties or around the office, it is often easy to gain weight unwittingly during this time of year. Thankfully, Dr. Michael Bohley shares the following tips about how to keep your waistline in check during the holidays.

Eat Breakfast

During the holidays, you are most likely scrambling to get last-minute gifts, to put Christmas decorations up around the house and much more. Nevertheless, it is important not to forget to eat breakfast before you rush out of the house. Eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, so you burn more calories throughout the day. It also helps you stay focused and in control of your eating habits throughout the day.

Eat More (Often)

Eating smaller, healthy meals and snacks every three to four hours throughout the day will keep your blood sugar levels from dipping too low. When your blood sugar levels drop off too dramatically, you feel famished, making it easy to eat whatever is in front of you, even if it is a clump of sugar.

Eat First

Before heading out to a holiday soirée, eat a small yet satisfying snack first. This may seem counterintuitive; however, by eating a nutritious snack before getting to a party, you will be less likely to gorge yourself on the smorgasbord of holiday treats that are available. Try eating a handful of almonds or a nonfat Greek yogurt before your event.

Eat More (Fruits and Veggies)

When you get to the party, try to eat mostly living foods. This means fruits and vegetables. Living foods are full of vitamins and nutrients, and are often a good source of fiber and water. They have a much stronger nutritional profile than processed foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt; these often offer no nutritional value at all.

Enjoy Treats in Moderation

Nonetheless, we still want you to enjoy yourself at the holiday party! Feel free to have a treat and perhaps a glass of wine at the event; just be sure to enjoy them in moderation. If you deny yourself all treats, you may feel deprived and overindulge once the holidays are over.

Feeling Frustrated That Your Smart Eating Habits Aren’t Paying Off?

Perhaps you have tried to eat healthy foods and get regular exercise throughout the entire year, but are still concerned with stubborn deposits of fat throughout certain areas of your body. If you are at or just slightly above your ideal weight but have fatty areas that are resistant to your healthful efforts, contact Dr. Bohley for help.
